Model "EV 57" Polished Brass Wall Lamp by Itsu, Finland ca 1950s

$ 3,325
  • Description
    By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of unique decorative elements. This lamp was manufactured by Itsu, or Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), a small, then lesser-known manufacturer that produced characteristic models in small quantities.

    The form of this brass light is made up of versatile geometric shapes; circle, cylinder, and a cone. What makes the design so compelling is its mix of restraint and personality. The lamp feels open and airy, with negative space functioning as an essential part of the model. At the same time, the craftsmanship is of the highest quality, standing the test of time. Accentuating the different shapes is the polished brass that features a nice patina. Overall, the composition of the shapes and clever decorative elements give this lamp a personality that isn’t loud but still stands out, which is an essentially Finnish design virtue. The refined work and unique aesthetic of Finnish lighting designers has made their creations increasingly valued by collectors in the know.

    This wall lamp is a wonderful example of the appeal of Finnish mid-century lighting. Its construction allows it to function equally well as a practical light source and decorative object. Whether installed in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, the model brings warmth, sophistication, and a sense of understated luxury to an interior. The enduring design demonstrates why Nordic lighting from this period continues to be so highly regarded today.
