Description
While working for the family business, Jacopo Foggini discovered the versatility of methacrylate, a material commonly used in the production of car reflectors. Impressed by the aesthetic and chromatic qualities of this thermoplastic resin, similar to glass yet significantly lighter, Foggini began experimenting with its use in the late 1990s. Mr. Foggini developed a machine to melt methacrylate and later polycarbonate at 200°C, transforming it into a filament that he then moulds with his hands to create luminous shapes and monumental artworks. These include labyrinths of coloured light, blurring the boundaries between art and design. He notes that the speed of execution is almost the same as that for glass, but that his materials allow him to mould monumental artworks that are extremely lightweight.
Jacopo Foggini was born in Turin and currently lives and works in Milan. He explores the boundaries between art and design, crossing the conventional boundaries of both disciplines. Jacopo joined the family business at an early age, where he discovered the versatility of methacrylate, an industrial material normally used in automotive design. His first experiments with this material date back to the early 1990s, when he began using a machine he had invented to heat the methacrylate to 200 degrees Celsius. This produced a filament that he then modelled by hand to create luminous shapes, monumental works and mazes of threads in an elegant intertwining of colours.
