Description
Large Baroque style gilt bronze eighteen-light chandelier
French, 19th Century
Height 170cm, diameter 140cm
This impressive, eighteen-light chandelier—which measures 1.7 metres (67 inches) in height—will bring grandeur and majesty to a room. It is crafted in a bold Baroque style, which was typical of decorative arts produced in France during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). In its style, this 19th Century chandelier brilliantly revives this historic period of design.
The gilt bronze (ormolu) chandelier is composed of a column, topped by a classical vase, which overflows with flowers and foliage. The vase is supported on the heads of term sculptures, with classical female bust tops, wearing strapwork body plates, and scrolled columnar bodies, draped with swags. The chandelier’s eighteen lights spring from six scrolled arms, which are decorated with curled acanthus leaves. The lights feature foliate drip-pans, and urn-shaped capitals, holding candle tubes. The chandelier’s column continues down to form a bowl, composed of a series of open arches, like a crown. The column terminates in a pinecone finial. - More Information
