Description
Large gilt bronze and glass ‘Versailles’ lantern
French, 20th Century
Height 120cm, diameter 55cm
This magnificent lantern was made in France and its design is inspired by one made in the 18th century for the Palace of Versailles.
Wrought from ormolu (gilt bronze) the lantern is of an octagonal form. Its shape is known as the ‘Versailles’ or beehive form. Four rows of rectangular panels of glass are joined by an ormolu frame mounted with floral decoration. Several other, larger decorative ormolu pieces decorate the top and bottom of the lantern.
Acanthus leaf detailing is applied to the upper part of the lantern, while foliate adornments are shaped to create a crown which surmounts the piece. Numerous seashells are applied below the crown. The bottom of this French work of art is mounted with further acanthus leaves as well as a selection of lion heads.
Taking inspiration from a piece made for a world-famous palace, the lantern with its royal-themed ornamentation would add a touch of grandeur to the appropriate interior space. -
