Jepsen and Johansen “Kubuarmatur Wall Lamps for Louis Poulsen , Denmark 1960s

$ 2,375
  • Description
    This pair of Louis Poulsen produced “Kubuarmatur” or cube lamps, more specifically known as “model 38117” wall lamps are quintessential representations of Danish modern design, characterized by simplicity, functionality, and a distinct minimalist aesthetic. These lamps, with their combination of opal glass shades and black bakelite wall mounts, encapsulate the era's design principles while delivering both form and function.

    The name "Kubuarmatur" is derived from the Danish word "kubus," which means cube or square. This nomenclature reflects the lamp's primary design element: a cuboid opal glass shade. The juxtaposition of the white opal glass and black bakelite mounts is a classic example of the contrast and harmony that Danish design often seeks to achieve. Louis Poulsen, the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer, has a rich history of producing iconic designs. Founded in 1874, the company has consistently emphasized craftsmanship and innovative design. The 1960s marked a period of growth and exploration for Louis Poulsen, and these Model 38117 wall lamps exemplify the company's commitment to avant-garde aesthetics. The design of these lamps is credited to K. Jepsen and A.F. Johansen, two talented Danish designers who were known for their contributions to the world of lighting. The opal glass shades emit a soft, diffused light that enhances the ambiance of any room, making these lamps as functional as they are stylish. They were produced at Louis Poulsen from around 1969 to 1977.

    These cube fixtures’ dark bakelite suspension in combination with the light matte glass shades create a highly “3D” look that stands out both figuratively and quite literally. Their shape gets enhanced when the pair is placed in a row together.
