Description
It is simply impossible to talk about 20th century lighting design without mentioning Finland and the Finnish “masters of light”. By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric glow and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements, as this model “71020” wall lamp exemplifies. The elegant, sculptural wall lamp is a distinctive piece that showcases Finnish designer Mauri Almari’s artistic design language. The beautiful brass body, reminiscent of tulips, is a testament to Almari’s craftsmanship and creativity.
The “71020” model pays homage to the era's emphasis on proportionality and aesthetic balance. The upward-facing opal glass shades are placed at the ends of the two organically curved brass arms stemming from an elaborate floral cluster. The opal glass, with its milky translucence, evokes a sense of ethereal beauty and warmth, transforming any space into a haven of ambient illumination. Since the two materials dictate the look, much attention was paid to their quality and to the craftsmanship. Finnish designers - such as Mauri Almari and Paavo Tynell - were masters of working with milk or opal glass, and their designs featuring the material are some of the country’s most sought-after pieces.
Much like mid-20th century Finnish design, this wall lamp is characterised by a harmonious blend of functionality and artistic expression. It is from a period where designers sought to create pieces that transcended mere utility, embracing a holistic approach that merged form and function seamlessly. The aesthetic purity and timeless elegance of Finnish design continues to resonate, shaping the way we perceive and appreciate the marriage of art and utility in everyday objects. This piece is sure to make a lovely addition to both traditional and contemporary spaces.
