Description
The so-called ‘Golden Age’ of the 1950s is often cited as the apex of the Scandinavian design movement, when an unparalleled volume of international design icons and iconic furniture models emerged from the cultural and geographical region. The individuality that led to these pieces’ success is exemplified by this floor lamp.
While the basic ideals of Scandinavian design are present in this model, it also has the quirks that separate it from the rest. The classic shape consists of a cone-shaped fabric shade that is supported by a thin, slanted brass pole. The graceful construction and materials are enlivened by unusual, unique details such as the black circle on the base and the large glass shade. The latter is especially particular, infusing the design with an organic aesthetic. The glass’s ribbed surface enhances the organic impression while the gently curved tube establishes the modern look. Many mid-twentieth century Scandinavian designers were influenced by developments in the Bauhaus school, but - like the designer of this floor lamp - generally translated them into a form of Functionalism which held humanist values at its heart. The result was this lamp: a softened Modernist style that is based on tradition and quality, both aesthetic and material. Functionality is of course a core part of the design, therefore the shade’s angle can be adjusted by a ball joint to direct light to any spot, or to create an atmospheric source of light. The brass tube is in itself a decorative element that highlights both the black ring on the circular base, and the light fabric of the lampshade.
The warm elegance and the “form follows function” catchphrase inherent in Scandinavian design is maintained, as well as high-quality craftsmanship. This floor lamp becomes more and more charming with each second spent on discovering its features, making it an ideal accent piece.
