Description
Pair of large gilt bronze sconces in the Régence style
French, c. 1880
Height 77cm, width 52cm, depth 40cm
This superb pair of gilt bronze sconces is wrought in the Régence style, evincing qualities of both the Baroque and the Rococo. Each sconce features a wide shield-shaped backplate, the edges of which are finished with scrolled acanthus leaf forms. The backplate is topped by a fleur-de-lis type finial, and is set below with a serene classical mask. Each sconce supports three scrolled light branches, the branches finished with further applied acanthus leaf detailing. For their unusual massiveness and the quality of the bronze casting, these sconces are wonderful examples of late 19th Century craftsmanship. -
