Description
Original Robert Dudley Best Bestlite BL1 Table Lamp
Offered for sale is an original Bestlite BL1 Table Lamp by Robert Dudley Best for Best & Lloyd.
This lamp is original and marked appropriately. It is in good vintage condition with some expected fine marks to the chrome as seen with the close up of the makers mark. The light arm swings out and the arm hinge raises and lowers on the chrome post. The lamp is marked "British Rd762006 Best". This is not a Gubi copy from Denmark.
Designed by Robert Dudley Best in 1930, the Bestlite BL1 Table Lamp is a recognized design with influences from Bauhaus. Winston Churchill chose the Bestlite BL1 Table Lamp for his desk in the Whitehall and history records that Churchill even took the lamp with him on his trips around the world. This was the big breakthrough for the Bestlite, which still makes it a design classic today. Bestlite is held in permanent collections at both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London.
Bestlite sold the rights to this lamp to Gubi in the late 1990s and they began to produce new lamps in 2006 from Denmark. This is the original British model.
20.5" high as the shortest.
