Description
Russian cut-glass, ormolu, and blue porcelain chandelier
Russian, 19th Century
Height 120cm, diameter 90cm
This stunning Russian chandelier brings together vibrant turquoise porcelain, shining gilt bronze, and expertly cut glass in a remarkable blend. The bright blue stem is a highly unusual feature, sensationally contrasting with the colours of the other two materials.
The chandelier comprises of twelve lights, each attached to the column with a curling ormolu branch. Around the chandelier, six glass obelisks issue two scrolling branches, and each branch terminates in an ormolu drip-pan set with a candle-style light fixture. Foliate decoration can be seen throughout: small five-petaled flowers sit between the branches whilst blooming ormolu tulips hang beneath, and a pine-cone finial surmounts the base of the chandelier.
From the main ormolu frame also hang three tiers of beaded glass droplets, which catch the light of the illuminated chandelier as they cascade. A number of larger, variously shaped glass pendants also adorn the fixture.
Brimming with colour and opulence, this fantastic chandelier would undoubtedly brighten the appropriate interior. -
