Description
The “Verona” pendant is easily one of the most recognizable lighting designs of the Scandinavian mid-century. Its layered look is unmistakeable and became synonymous with Svend Middelboe.
The manufacturer, Nordisk Solar Compagni Lights, won a reputation for quality and a number of international design awards during the 1960s and 70s. The individual shades of this lamp are arranged funnel-shaped towards the inside; they are positioned so that the light is reflected at the top and bottom of the shades. The reflection provides even light distribution at the surface of the lamp and supplies harmonic transparency of shape and light. The inside of the structure is lacquered white, which adds to the modern look, while also adding visual interest. Furthermore, the pairing of brass and white lacquer creates an appealing effect when the light is on. The brass anodized aluminium structure is mesmerizing; as anodization converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant oxide layer. This layer is not applied to the surface like coating or plating, but is fully integrated with the underlying aluminium substrate, therefore it cannot chip or peel.
The craftsmanship matches the design, both are of the highest quality. Sven Middelboe was a Danish designer, and in times when lighting became a signature feature for interior design he was chief of design in the lighting fixtures business of Nordisk Solar Compagni. His designs from the 1960s and 70s define the company’s portfolio, headed by the “Verona”.
