Swedish Grace Patinated Bronze Wall Lamp, Sweden 1920s

Prior to the more famous and minimalist Swedish designs that were to develop in the post-war period, Swedish Grace developed in parallel with the more famous Art Deco movement, as its Nordic counterpart. This movement seamlessly blended the decorative expressiveness of Art Deco and Neoclassicism with the characteristic Scandinavian restraint (or minimalism, as it would be coined in the early 20th century).

This lamp has a traditional yet playful and eclectic feel to it, making it exemplary of this period. The lamp features a gently curved shade crafted from frosted glass, its soft matte surface diffuses light with a warm ambient glow. The glass features ribs in the thickness of the glass. The frosted surface allows light to pass through while managing to defuse it beautifully. As is the case with most wall sconces, light is directed upwards and outwards, rather than down. Moreover, it is mounted on a metal back-plate featuring a natural element, characteristic of the Swedish appreciation of nature. The rest of the design is not short of subtle decorative elements either. The top bronze detail ties in the link creating vertical symmetry.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The wall lamp has recently been reconditioned and rewired. The brass is patinated. There are minor dents and scratches in the metal. Due to the age and nature of the bronze, the lamp may have marks and discolouration. There is a chip on the right side of the shade. Additional imperfections on the glass may be present due to manufacturing inconsistencies and age. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
