Description
The profoundly influential 20th-century Swedish designers pioneered a style that was lightweight, floral, and elegant in its simplicity, which is embodied by this lamp. These designers achieved an elegant combination of practicality and sophistication that was unmatched by many of their contemporaries in other countries.
This five-armed, brass ceiling lamp’s design is rooted in traditional historic styles, while employing modern details such as the curved arms, coloured striped glass, and brass details. The shades have a classic drum shape that offers plenty of surface to showcase the glass, and to illuminate the space. The straight rod is combined with predominantly curved elements, such as the chandelier arms and decorative scrolls on the body. Despite the details, the structure remains uncluttered so that the shades stand out effectively. The eye-catching brass body is enriched with the warmth the light creates when the light is switched on, creating a cosy atmosphere. Thanks to the arrangement of the shades, the light is distributed evenly in all directions when switched on. The combination of materials, shapes, and textures evoke this lamp’s classically Swedish modern design, a clear return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the later brighter, mass-produced models’ aesthetic.
The best qualities of Swedish mid-century designers’ light fixtures are most often their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design. With a focus on craftsmanship, materials, and clean lines, the Swedish Modern design philosophy behind this lamp remains relevant today.
