Paavo Tynell Model "553" Glass Pendant Ceiling Lamp for Taito, Finland 1940s

$ 4,180
  • Description
    The model “553”hanging lamp, designed by Paavo Tynell in the 1940s and produced by Taito in Finland, is a refined example of Tynell’s ability to merge elegant form with functional lighting.

    It is simply impossible to talk about 20th century lighting without mentioning Finland. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are the atmospheric glow and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements, as this hanging lamp exemplifies. Featuring a stepped opal glass shade that diffuses light gently and evenly, this lamp creates a beautiful soft ambient glow. The main point of visual interest is the sculptural glass shade suspended from a slender brass stem, lending the piece subtle architectural character. Tynell’s use of opal glass for this lamp highlights his sensitivity to materials and light behaviour. The stepped design of the shade adds dimension while also nodding to the streamlined modernist aesthetics of the time. The brass stem introduces warmth and contrast, grounding the glass form with a touch of sophistication. The design’s main point is its effective simplicity, free of any unnecessary ornamentation, which was Tynell’s signature. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. In addition, while the form is quite succinct with clear lines and precision in the smallest details, it still possesses a luxuriously stylish impression. This model undoubtedly reflects Taito’s high standards of craftsmanship and Tynell’s vision of lighting as both utility and art. With its harmonious proportions and timeless materials, the lamp embodies the ideals of Nordic modernism.

    Finnish designers like Paavo Tynell and manufacturers like Taito pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques. His international design influence grew thanks to the works created at Taito, which continue to be highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts today.
