Description
The cheery yellow Daffodil blossom held particular sway over Louis Comfort Tiffany, who incorporated the iconic garden flower into many works of art. As early as 1900, Tiffany directed Clara Driscoll and the “Tiffany Girls” to design a leaded glass shade depicting the flower; Tiffany Studios went on to produce at least 10 distinct leaded glass shades depicting the daffodil, more than any other individual bloom in the company’s catalogue. The original numbered watercolor cartoons for several of Tiffany Studios’ Daffodil shades are preserved in the collection of the New-York Historical.
This 16-inch diameter domed shade – likely one of Driscoll’s designs – features exceptional glass selection: each of the daffodil blossoms encircling the shade is articulated in mottled yellow Tiffany glass, carefully selected and placed to create a three dimensional effect when light is transmitted through the shade. These vibrant yellow flowers, surrounded by spiky leaves in variegated green, contrast with the deep blue mottled background glass. A series of border rows at the crown and along the lower edge are formed by heavily rippled glass in a pale shade of green streaked with golden yellow.
The shade rests on an authentic Tiffany Studios bronze “Library Standard” Table Base with three arms, with “Conventional” decoration on the cushion of the footed base and applied wirework on the stem, in the original rich brown patina.
Both the shade and the base of this authentic Tiffany lamp are signed with firm’s marks and model numbers.
