Description
As with many of the most iconic designs produced by Tiffany Studios, the Lotus Lamp takes its inspiration from the natural world with an unusual twist.
The shade of this original Tiffany Lamp is characterized by a series of undulating ribs and ridges of leaded green Tiffany Glass, directly referencing the veined underside of the massive round lily pads of the Giant Water Lily or sacred lotus. These botanical curiosities became wildly popular specimens after their discovery in the 19th century.
The shade rests on an original Tiffany bronze base in a rich brown patina decorated with allover ribbing, which recalls the form of the shade.
Both the shade and base of this original Tiffany lamp are signed.
Edgar Kaufmann Jr. prominently displayed a similar green Tiffany Lotus Lamp on his desk in the master bedroom at Fallingwater after inheriting the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece. Edgar Kaufmann Jr. was a major collector of Tiffany Lamps and Tiffany Glass and important pieces from his collection - including the Lotus Lamp - can still be seen today in the house where they harmonize perfectly with the interior. -
