Since the end of the 1950s Venini has worked on the design of modular lighting systems, using glass modules that can be easily reproduced and assembled for the production of chandeliers and wall lamps.
After the success of the polyhedrons (in collaboration with Carlo Scarpa) of the trihedrons and ribbons, in 1970 Ludovico Diaz de Santillana proposed a new type of module: the patchwork.
Each supporting structure can mount five squares of larger dimensions and be completed with squares of smaller dimensions.
Furthermore, the modules can intersect each other, sharing squares, to create a sort of light carpet (see the installation at the exhibition: Venini Luce 1921-1985, at the Stanze del Vetro in Venice. Catalogue by Marino Barovier and Carla Sonego, Skira, 2022, page 505
The sconces have one candelabra light each. Each sconce can mount up to five big glass squares and two additional small ones, however they can be arranged and combined in several different ways.
We have 25 big squares (6 amber, 8 yellow, 11 multicolour) and 10 small (3 yellow, 7 multicolour).
