Description
Art Deco Brass & Bakelite “Sentinel” Lamp by Walter Von Nessen for Chase, circa 1930
Rare and difficult-to-find Art Deco brass and Bakelite “Sentinel” table lamp designed by Walter Von Nessen for the Chase Brass and Copper Company, circa 1930s. This whimsical yet sophisticated design captures the charm and innovation of the Machine Age with its stylized soldier form in polished brass and red Bakelite. The lamp is in excellent working condition, retains its original cord, and is clearly marked “Chase” with the company logo on the base (#4672).
During the 1930s, Chase Brass and Copper Company expanded beyond its industrial roots to produce decorative and functional household items made from copper, chrome, and brass. Working with celebrated industrial designers such as Russel Wright, Lurelle Guild, and Walter Von Nessen, Chase brought modern design into the American home. The line was discontinued in the early 1940s when the company shifted to manufacturing war materials.
An authentic Von Nessen “Sentinel” lamp is an exceptional find for collectors of early modern design. Its bold geometric form and playful presence make it a highlight in any Deco or modern interior.
