Description
LATE BAROQUE CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR
Probably Italian, composed of 18th century elements
37 1/4" H x 2" D x 42" W [frame]
22" H x 26 7/8" W [visible glass]
Deeply carved with bold, scrolling acanthus and foliate ornament, the frame exhibits the robust sculptural quality characteristic of the Baroque period. Each corner and mid-point of the sides is embellished with bold and dramatic grotesque mask projections, each worked with high-relief foliage and curling tendrils. The reverse shows the original wood backing boards, later reinforced, with the current mirror plate likely a later replacement.
Condition:
Probably cut down from a larger frame and reassembled into the present form. Mirrored glass replaced in the 20th/21st century along with the insertion of a framer's backing board. Loss to the upper left grotesque along the edge. Other extensive wear to the largely original gilding, this with inpainting, overpainting and chips throughout. Joint separations. Back repainted, probably during the late 19th century. A great look. Ready to place.
