Description
Biedermeier ash mirror, the crest decorated with an ebonized molding; the inset frieze panel with book-matched veneers and semi-circular ink decoration. The lower portion with a similarly bookmatched panel and geometric ink decoration over an ebonized base molding. The mirror glass is a modern replacement.
The ink decoration on this charming mirror is a rare survivor. While ink was commonly used during the Biedermeier period throughout Germany and Austria, it lacks the durability of inlay. Whereas inlay is set into the wood, ink decoration is drawn onto the wood surface where it remains vulnerable to polishing and refinishing.
Ash, not particularly common on Biedermeier furniture, was used primarily in Central and Eastern Germany, although it was also used in Vienna and Berlin. -
