Description
The originality of an object is what gives it a greater profile as time goes by. This looking glass and frame are, bar a small repair to the feathers at the top, as they were when they were first created. It is a remarkable thought, particularly when you realize that one part of the object is glass. And the glass is mesmerizing with wonderful curves to accommodate the double scroll ends at the center of the top. (Almost all mirror plates were bevelled at this time.) I can relate this mirror to the work of John Belchier, one of the better known looking glass makers of the era whose work can be seen in many museums including Colonial Williamsburg and the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
