French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Reeded Gilt Mirror with Double Plates

$ 4,500
  • Description
    Dimensions: 51” H x 28 ¼” W x 1 ½” D

    An exciting French mirror from circa 1840, framed in classic reeded molding of the Louis XVI taste that reflects the luster of gold leaf, now patinated to a fine craquelure texture. The rectangular frame is symmetrical, however the mirror glass is stacked vertically indicating it was made at a time or place where the technology was not available to make a single, large plate. Note how there is some light foxing and scratches on the surface otherwise the reflection is clear. Look closely to observe the crystals beginning to accumulate on the edges of the plates that add sparkle to the reflection. The ribbed lines of the molding are warmed by red bole peeking through that give dimension to the otherwise restrained design. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
