Mid-century Italian Modernist Horizontal Overmantel Brass Scroll Beveled Mirror

Mid-century Italian modernist horizontal overmantel wall mirror in brass and beveled mirrored glass with scroll crest, Italy, 1950s.

The unusually wide, architectural form is defined by gently tapering sides, softly rounded corners and a subtly bowed upper profile. The brass frame follows the perimeter of the original beveled mirror plate, giving the piece a substantial yet refined presence.

At the center of the upper edge, the frame steps downward to accommodate a hand-formed brass scroll ornament composed of a series of loops. This decorative detail contrasts with the mirror’s otherwise simple geometry and gives the design its distinctive character. The curved shape, narrow proportions and scroll ornament are typical of postwar Italian design and reflect the modernist style associated with Gio Ponti and the Italian Novecento tradition. The mirror retains its solid wood backing and displays beautifully aged original materials throughout.

Particularly striking above a mantel, console or credenza, its generous horizontal proportions also make it an excellent statement mirror for an entry hall, living room or dining room.
