A Pair of Haagse School Art Deco Lounge Chairs, The Netherlands 1930s

$ 7,362
  • Description
    In 1920, the term "Nieuwe Haagse School" was first mentioned by the architect C.J. Blaauw. And not in a positive way, incidentally. Blaauw thought nothing of the latest developments in modern architecture. "Typical of The Hague" - that was how the designer spoke of the style. The style blossomed between 1925 and 1940 and brought uniformity to the cityscape. In furniture design, the style is characterized by a lot of symmetry, angular and cubist forms, and draws a great deal of influence from Berlage's rationalism, the arts and crafts movement, and De Stijl.

    The New Hague School is more luxurious than the style of the Amsterdam School but makes use of strict and clean lines. While the painters of The Hague school generally made use of relatively somber colours, which is why The Hague School is sometimes called the Gray School, this can hardly be said about furniture designers. One thing that connects Haagse School furniture is the appreciation of beautiful, quality wood and artisanal woodworking. The Hague School is a variation on Art Deco. The style is recognizable by the straight and cubist shapes of the furniture that reflect the architecture of that time. The Hague School was a mix of the rationalism of Berlage, the traditional Arts and Crafts Movement, the interiors of Frank Lloyd Wright, Rietveld, and the avant-garde movement, De Stijl. All this resulted in a more modern design. These lounge chairs have stunning solid wood frames with cubist angles, most apparent in the square arms that form the front legs as well. On the sides, the arms appear to defy gravity, holding onto the bodies seemingly without any joinery. This neat detail showcases the high level woodworking and creates an effortless look. The mostly square shapes of the bodies are upholstered in a patterned fabric with a geometric pattern. This fabric choice adds new angles and a great amount of visual interest to the design. The elegant, restrained colour scheme prevents the fabric from being too loud, instead, it complements the natural beauty of the wood. The arms’ angles are aligned with the seats and backs’ angles, resulting in a harmonious look while also being ergonomic with utmost support for the spine. The sitting comfort is therefore exceptional, further aided by the stability the wooden legs provide.

    The clean lines and symmetrical shapes of this pair of lounge chairs are ideal to give any style of living space a bold Art Deco touch. The upholstery adds an extra layer of style with its elegant individuality. Once defining the cityscape of The Hague, this style of Dutch Art Deco is special in art and design history for numerous reasons, and so are these chairs.
