Alvar Aalto for Artek Pair of Model 400 “Tank” Lounge Chairs, Finland, 1937
Pair of iconic Model 400 “Tank” chairs designed by Alvar Aalto for Artek, Finland, circa 1937. These early examples feature sculptural bentwood arms and laminated birch frames, reupholstered in a textured boucle fabric—characterized by its looped, curled surface and soft hand.
Though produced in different years, both chairs present cohesively with slight frame variations that speak to handmade production. Each retains the original stamped manufacturer’s mark to underside: “Aalto Design Artek Made in Sweden 37 (1937).”

Seat height: approx. 16.5”
Materials:
Bent and laminated birch, boucle upholstery
Condition:
Restored and reupholstered. Frames and arms retain original patina with visible wear and marks consistent with age and use. -
