Description
These oak armchairs were produced in the Netherlands during the 1920s and belong to the architectural tradition of the Amsterdam School, the Dutch movement in which furniture design was closely connected to developments in architecture and the decorative arts. The chairs are constructed around a rigorous geometric framework of straight legs and uprights, broad horizontal armrests and substantial rectangular back panels, allowing the natural grain of the oak to become an important part of the composition. Subtle shaping to the armrests and contrasting dark details at the feet introduce refinement without interrupting the deliberately restrained character. Their restrained ornamentation and strongly architectural construction place the chairs within the more geometrically disciplined expression of the Amsterdam School and emerging Dutch modernism.
