Art Deco Reclining Lounge Chair with Footstool, Europe 1930s

$ 8,360
  • Description
    Art Deco interior design, particularly in relation to furniture design, reveals a unique era of craftsmanship and style that remains influential to the present day. European furniture makers embraced this style in the years between the World Wars, and produced some of the most exciting and innovative furniture the world had seen.

    At its inception, Art Deco was orientated towards the luxury market and paid little attention to costs and retail prices. As a result, pieces were one-of-a-kind. Though elements of Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern are markedly different, both styles value beauty, shape, and colour. This lounge chair and footstool pair was created during the modern age of material innovation, aesthetic creativity, and instantly recognisable design. As this pair showcases, European furniture designers’ artistic approach was anchored by characteristic Art Deco refinement expressed through graceful forms and traditional methods. The juxtaposition of the complex, sleek wood with the soft, velvety cushions creates a striking visual contrast that is both functional and decorative. The cushions are upholstered in a rich mohair fabric that invites the sitter to have a double-faceted experience between the rigidity of the structure and the softness of the upholstery, adding warmth and comfort to the overall design. Moreover, thanks to the outstanding ergonomics of the reclined backrest and use of a footstool, the whole body of the sitter is supported. The design embodies a sense of history and modernity, making the chair and footstool versatile and stylish additions to any space. The unique form speaks to an appreciation of both past and present, offering a sophisticated and inviting seating option that blends comfort with cutting-edge design.

    This pair symbolises an era of sophistication and luxury, and is a testament to the timeless allure of Art Deco pieces. They can seamlessly integrate into a variety of design schemes, whether brutalist or modern, enhancing the overall aesthetic and imbuing the space with a touch of opulence.
