Description
This beautiful sofa recalls the Art Deco era thanks to its bold geometric form and visual richness. European furniture makers of the 1930s embraced new styles while still drawing influence from previous movements like Cubism and Art Nouveau, so in the years between the World Wars some of the most exciting and innovative furniture had emerged.
Predating the strict functionality of mid-century modernism, this two-seater showcases elements that defined the early 20th century design era. While not overtly ornate, this sofa underscores the careful craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterizes Art Deco furniture. The standout feature of the piece is the burl birch overlay, which perfectly accents the armrests, bringing warmth and personality to the sofa. Burl wood is a growth irregularity in trees that results in unique patterns such as swirls and knots on the trunk, branches, or roots. These formations are highly praised for their intricate pattern, rich colour, and how no two pieces are identical. The use of burl birch on this sofa has therefore created a lovely visual appeal. Not only are the armrests beautiful in themselves, but they complement the plush upholstered body. With its golden hue, the marble-like wood is a perfect pairing for the earthy shade of the upholstery. To complete the design, the sofa features two lion’s paw feet in the front, once again highlighting the charming individuality of the piece.
Textural, bold and remarkable are the best descriptors of this creative piece of Art Deco design. Mixing bold proportions with intentional angularity, these sofa add a touch of iconic glamour to any living space.
