Description
Maison Arlus is a French lighting design company that was founded in the early 20th century by Robert and Jean Arlus. The company quickly gained recognition for its innovative and stylish lighting fixtures, which were characterised by their use of high-quality materials and their focus on functionality.
Maison Arlus became particularly well-known for its use of metal and brass in its designs, as can be seen with this wall lamp. The main decorative elements are placed around the functional parts, namely the Perspex shade. This type of material ensures the light is diffused gently, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, while the sleek look of the black metal adds a touch of chromatic and textural contrast. A modern look is achieved by the sleek execution of the black lacquered saucer-like silhouette. Despite being made of metal, the body appears light thanks to the brass structure connecting to the back plate. This light model continues to embody the qualities of mid-century modernism that has made it one of the most sought after design movements to this day. The clean lines and understated look further ensure that it maintains its relevance and beauty for decades to come, and allows the piece to stand out and complement any space.
Over the years, Maison Arlus collaborated with a number of notable designers, including Jacques Biny, Pierre Guariche, and Michel Buffet, and continued to produce a wide range of lighting fixtures that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Today, many of Maison Arlus's vintage designs are highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts.
