Description
FINE AND RARE LATE CLASSICAL CARVED MAHOGANY SMALL SOFA
Boston or Salem, c. 1835
The upholstered back above a loose seat cushion flanked by carved arm rests which continue to the floor with lotus-carved feet on casters.
H: 34” W: 60” D: 27”
Condition: Excellent: Surviving in perfect condition, refinished with shellac in the manner of the period. The upholstery is modern.
The design of this couch is derived directly from a Grecian Couch on page 12 of Thomas King’s The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified (London, 1829). Though almost all American furniture of this period is inspired by English or French pattern book drawings, few are replicated with such rigor. In this case, however, King’s design is of a couch, having only one arm rest.
The lotus carving at the base of the arm rest relates to carving associated with the cabinetmakers Kimbal & Sargent of Salem, although an attribution is by no means certain. -
