Danish Mid-Century Nut Wood Armchair, Denmark 1950s

$ 4,180
  • Description
    Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, Danish designers have led the way in furniture design. Taking advantage of new industrial technologies, they combined this inspiration with minimalist design, creating a style that became so influential that it is recognized as a design movement in itself.

    Danish Modern equals this armchair: focused on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen and cabinetmakers. Clean and pure lines coupling craftsmanship with delicate research into proportions, materials, and the requirements of the human body, adapting the design to modern-day needs. The most brilliant part of the structure is the way in which the arms flow into the front legs, and how the seat “hugs” them. The back legs are tilted to support the slightly bent back. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, the designer of this armchair maintains the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking and its material. Nut wood is a less seen but excellent choice for furniture, as it is stable and solid and has several unique colours. Here, the wood has a beautiful dark hue with lighter grain and pattern.

    With a luxurious and warm upholstery that elevates the colour of the wood, this chair truly exemplifies Danish Modernism. The design movement has provided the model and set of values which still inspire Scandinavian design: durability, functionality, reliability - but also less tangible values such as simplicity, equality, joy, and daily pleasure.
