Description
Pair of Erwine and Estelle Laverne Champagne Swivel Stools, c. 1960
United States, circa 1960
A pair of sculptural Champagne swivel stools designed by Erwine and Estelle Laverne. Each features a transparent molded Lucite shell with gracefully curved arms and a circular seat cushion upholstered in cream-colored faux sheepskin. The shells rest on slender steel pedestal bases with circular feet, presently finished in white.
The Champagne design, introduced in 1957 as part of the Laverne Invisible Group, reflects the designers' exploration of transparent materials, organic forms, and innovative modern seating. This uncommon bar-height variation combines the visual lightness of the original design with a striking architectural presence.
Materials: Lucite, painted steel, faux sheepskin.
Dimensions: 44¼ H × 23 W × 25 D inches (112 × 58 × 63 cm), each.
Markings: Cast manufacturer's mark to underside of each example: "Laverne NY-22."
Literature: Michael Krzyzanowski, Laverne: Furniture, Textiles, & Wallcoverings, pp. 123–126, illustrating similar examples.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Slight discoloration to the Lucite shells. The steel bases appear to have been repainted at some point. The pair presents well. -
