Description
This so-called “deck or cruise chair” is not only visually arresting, but also interesting thanks to its historical use. Folding chairs have been used as seating in the Mediterranean since the 13th century BC, both in Ancient Egypt and Rome. This utilitarian piece of furniture evolved with time and during the mid-century era, many elegant versions were created with sculpted details.
The chair is made of solid oak wood and was inspired by, or even used as a deck chair on cruisers around the mid-century. Regardless, it shares the adjustable back feature that was the most essential part of this type of chair as it provided maximum comfort and thus, a true lounging experience. Uniquely, the adjustability is achieved through a brass coated rod that can be placed at three different heights. This is an elegant solution that also provides material contrast to the wood, while the horizontal rod also contrast with the vertical slats comprising the back of the chair. The oak frame is beautifully sculpted with sweeping curves and angles dominating it. The arms follow the curve of the back legs that are elongated to provide the frame for the seat as well. The front legs and arm supports are sculpted into impressive curves that define the overall impression. Similar rolled curves can be found on the top of the back and at the end of the armrests. The artistic silhouette is complemented by the upholstered seat and back cushions with an earthy, elegant colour palette and texture. The combination of the wood and the fabric creates an understated, luxurious look.
Thanks to the angles and adjustable backs, this lounge chair is perfect to relax in the sun, not only on a boat, but in any setting. The wood has a beautiful patina and the chair emanates history to such a degree that the user can almost feel it.
