Pair of Two-Tone Stoneware Table Lamps by Søholm, Denmark Late 20th Century

$ 8,360
  • Description
    Søholm Stentøj (“Søholm Stoneware”) was one of the oldest and most revered manufacturers in Danish ceramics. It was founded in Rønne, on the Baltic island of Bornholm, in 1835 and became known for its distinctive ceramic designs, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. In the middle of the 20th century, Søholm produced a wide range of stoneware in various patterns and shapes, marrying practicality with artistry to create items that feel both grounded and elegant.

    This pair of table lamps embody that sensibility through balanced proportions and nuanced surface treatment. The ceramic bases are formed with a rounded, almost amphora vase silhouette, expanding at the centre before narrowing toward the neck. This shaping gives the lamps a strong presence while maintaining its softness. The glazed finish is central to the design: the contrast between the grey ceramic and the darker sections introduces depth and variation across the surface. The glazing emphasizes the form rather than masking it, with the colours flowing naturally along the curves of the body. Above, the cylindrical shades provide a structured counterpoint. Their pleated fabric diffuses the light evenly, casting a warm glow that complements the earthy tones of the bases. The transition between base and shade is handled with clarity, allowing each element to remain distinct while contributing to a cohesive composition. The repetition of geometry across the pair highlights their visual impact, making them particularly effective when placed together.

    Søholm produced a wide range of pieces, all united by a mix of functionality and aesthetic beauty. This balance allows these lamps to feel both useful, composed, yet organic, making them adaptable to a variety of interiors. They function not only as sources of light, but also as subtle sculptural objects, embodying the enduring appeal of Danish ceramic design in the late 20th century.
