A distinctive 19th-century French Arts & Crafts turned-wood armchair featuring an impressive ladderback design with horizontal splats, each terminating in gracefully shaped, scalloped edges. The tall back is framed by two heavily turned vertical stiles, elaborately decorated with spool-and-ball turnings and surmounted by carved finials.

The straight wooden armrests continue the richly turned vocabulary of the chair, while the robust turned legs are joined by an intricate system of multiple perimeter stretchers forming a highly stable H-shaped base. The broad lower front stretcher is particularly noteworthy, featuring a symmetrical scalloped profile that echoes the decorative form of the upper crest rail.

The combination of substantial construction, rhythmic turning, and sculptural carved details gives this unusual French armchair a strong Arts & Crafts presence and exceptional decorative appeal.
