Description
A rare and unusual Georgian desk chair with a half round back on a swivelling base. Substantial mahogany construction with a show-wood burl arms and backsplat. Extraordinary and boldly carved acanthus leaf termini on the seat rail and carving to arm handles. The four legs are carved with attenuated acanthus forms and terminate in cabriole legs finished with scrolled toes. Leather upholstered and studded back and seat that can be used facing forwards or backwards. Burl mahogany top and backsplat and brass plate to circumference of chair back fitted with inset screws.

Similar to several continental examples including a French chair at Chateau Ecouen dating from the 1500’s, and a walnut Italian chair pictured in Levy, Saul, “Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento” 1964, Plate 25.
