Description
Executed in 1951 by G.A. van de Groenekan after an early 1920s design by Gerrit Rietveld, this chair represents an important continuation of De Stijl principles into mid-century production. Van de Groenekan, a close collaborator of Rietveld, was instrumental in producing and preserving his designs, both during and after Rietveld’s lifetime. The present example follows the characteristic open construction, composed of linear wooden slats connected through visible dowel joints, emphasizing structure and clarity.
The grey-painted surface introduces a subtle tonal layer, aligning with later interpretations in which colour and finish contribute to the perception of form. Compared to earlier, more experimental versions, this execution presents a more stabilized and resolved composition. A written declaration by Van de Groenekan confirms its production in 1951, and the piece bears the workshop’s mark. -
