Two bamboo chair by Gio Ponti and Lio Carminati for Conte Biancamano
-
Description
The model of the pair of armchairs, designed by Gio’ Ponti & Lio Carminati, is called Biancamano. The name comes from the Italian liner, launched in 1925, the Conte Biancamano, which made its maiden voyage on the prestigious Genoa – New York route. About twenty years after the launch, the ship was refitted as a passenger ship. On this occasion, some of the most important artists, architects and decorators of the time were called in. The main rooms were assigned to ten different designers, including painters Massimo Campigli and Mario Sironi, sculptor Marcello Mascherini and enameller Paolo De Poli. Gio Ponti himself, who was in charge of the furnishings, wrote: ‘Count Biancamano, through the parade of its rooms is an expression of different temperaments: this gives variety to the ship’.
