Heywood Wakefield Style Armchair, Europe First half of the 20th Century
-
Description
This beautiful armchair is an example of 20th century European design and outstanding craftsmanship with a quality that honours the materials and their users. The first half of the 20th century was a high point for furniture makers, and this chair shows why. It is in the Heywood Wakefield style - a style that developed in the 1930s - which valued sleek lines and elegant forms thanks to its influence from the Art Deco and Bauhaus movements.
This chair’s frame is quite distinctive even beyond its arms. The shape and construction show the signs of a master cabinetmaker as the chair has an almost sculptural look. The backrest is visually “unattached” to the seat which creates an impression of weightlessness. The piece has an overall flow to it, which is a result of the pointed arms that continue to form the front legs. The dark blue fabric adds to the stylish look, as it highlights the wood’s gorgeous colour and pattern. European designers believed that a chair should always be comfortable to sit on and beautiful to look at from all sides and angles and this piece is evidence of that. There is a subtle interplay of texture and tone present that allows the chair to seamlessly complement a range of interior styles, from classic vintage settings to contemporary spaces that value timelessness. This armchair, is a striking example of the commitment to elegance and modernity, packaged in restrained sophistication.
Unlike designs from outside the continent, European furniture wasn’t flashy but designed to be well-made and to fit a warm, comfortable and welcoming home. As this armchair exemplifies, blending functionality, good quality natural materials and organic colours with excellent craftsmanship is the key to the success of modern design.
