Pair of Kandidaten Teak Easy Chairs by Ib Kofod-Larsen, 1950s

Price Upon Request
  • Description
This rare pair of Kandidaten easy chairs, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE in Sweden during the 1950s, embodies the essential qualities of Scandinavian mid-century design—functionality, natural materials, and a refined, understated elegance. These chairs highlight Kofod-Larsen’s signature approach, where sculptural lines and comfort are brought together through expert craftsmanship.

The teak wood frames are gracefully proportioned, featuring clean, angular silhouettes with soft, organic curves that lend the chairs both structure and lightness. The armrests are gently contoured, flowing seamlessly into the rest of the frame, while the slatted backrests not only enhance the visual openness but also provide ergonomic support. The teak has developed a rich patina over the decades, showcasing the natural grain and deepening the character of the wood. This warm surface tone contrasts subtly with the original wool upholstery.

Upholstered in textured wool fabric in muted, earthy tones, the seat and back cushions complement the wood’s natural warmth while introducing a tactile softness. The original fabric remains intact, showing only minor signs of use, consistent with careful preservation. The cushions are well-formed, retaining their shape and comfort, offering an inviting place to sit without compromising the visual clarity of the design.

The Kandidaten chairs measure approximately 71 cm in width, 78 cm in depth, and 74.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm (or roughly 28 inches wide, 30.7 inches deep, 29.3 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches). Their scale is generous yet proportionate, making them suitable for both living spaces and quiet reading corners. The relatively low stance and relaxed angle of the backrest enhance their comfort, reinforcing their role as casual, lounge-style seating.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a prominent figure in Danish furniture design, known for his sensitive treatment of form and his emphasis on natural materials. He often designed for Swedish, American, and British manufacturers in addition to his native Denmark, and his collaborations with Swedish firm OPE (Olof Perssons Fåtöljindustri) resulted in several notable designs, including the Kandidaten chair. His work consistently demonstrates a deep respect for both material and user, resulting in pieces that are beautiful, functional, and enduring.

OPE, established in Sweden, was known for producing high-quality modern furniture that adhered to the Scandinavian ethos of durability, simplicity, and attention to detail. Their collaboration with Kofod-Larsen yielded pieces that merged Danish design sensibility with Swedish craftsmanship.

This pair of Kandidaten chairs is in well-preserved vintage condition, with a patina that enhances their authenticity. The teak frames remain solid and beautifully finished, while the wool upholstery is clean and structurally sound. Together, they exemplify the sophistication and comfort of Scandinavian modern seating, making them a valuable and timeless addition to any design-conscious interior.
