Yrjo Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) is a Finnish designer known for his furniture and textiles.
In 1937, Ilmari Tapiovaara graduated in interior design and the following year worked for Asko. He would have been heavily influenced by Alvar Aalto. During World War II, Tapiovaara designed canoes and field furniture for the Finnish army, a difficult task given that only local wood and simple tools could be used, and no nails or screws were available. His Domus chair attracts attention. This chair was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Helsinki student residence Domus Academica where he worked with his wife from 1946 to 1947. The couple set up their own office in 1951. The following year, he taught design at theIllinois Institute of Technology. He then worked in Paraguay and Mauritius for a United Nations development programme. In 1959, he was awarded theOrder of the Lion of Finland “Pro-Finlandia Medal” and, in 1964, a gold medal at the 13th Triennial in Milan for his Polar cutlery.
He performed much of his work for universities, schools and also made a “Root Table” for the Finnish Army. Furniture based on his sketches is still produced in the 21ste century. -
