Description
Designed by Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992), this pair of L-Shape armchairs exemplifies the designer’s modernist commitment to formal reduction and structural clarity. In contrast to prevailing European decorative traditions, Tenreiro articulated a distinctly Brazilian design language grounded in proportion, restraint, and material honesty. The L-Shape model distills these principles into a resolved and disciplined seating form.
The design is defined by rectilinear geometry and the deliberate absence of armrests, resulting in a light, open silhouette. Slender, precisely proportioned legs support the seating volume, creating a sense of visual suspension while maintaining structural balance. This interplay between lightness and stability is characteristic of Tenreiro’s broader body of work, where architectural logic governs form.
Crafted from Brazilian hardwood, the frames have been professionally refinished to reveal the wood’s natural grain and tonal depth. The seats have been newly reupholstered in a soft cotton fabric, selected for its understated texture and compatibility with the original design. Presented in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with period and use, this pair stands as a refined and increasingly scarce example of Tenreiro’s contribution to Brazilian modern design. -
