Rare “Cadeira de Embalo” Rocking Chair in Solid Rosewood & Caning, Tenreiro

$ 55,000
  • Description
    An exceptionally rare and historically important "Cadeira de Embalo" (Rocking Chair) designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in 1948—one of the earliest and most celebrated seating designs created shortly after the opening of Langenbach & Tenreiro, the workshop and gallery that would redefine Brazilian furniture design.

    Designed during the formative years of Brazilian Modernism, this rocking chair embodies the philosophy that established Tenreiro as the father of modern Brazilian furniture. Rejecting the visual heaviness that characterized traditional European-inspired furniture, Tenreiro sought what he famously described as "lightness"—not merely physical weight, but a sense of grace, elegance, comfort, and perfect functionality. His furniture introduced an entirely new language where refined proportions, honest construction, and native Brazilian materials worked together in complete harmony.

    This model is widely regarded as one of the designer's landmark creations. Executed in richly figured solid Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá) with its original hand-woven cane, it demonstrates Tenreiro's extraordinary understanding of wood construction and his ability to create furniture that appears almost weightless despite its remarkable structural integrity.

    The architectural frame is composed of slender yet strong solid rosewood members joined with meticulous cabinetmaking precision. Every line has been carefully resolved, from the elegant sweep of the rockers to the gently tapered legs and sculptural open armrests. The continuous flowing silhouette gives the chair an unmistakable sense of movement even while at rest.

    The generous caned back and seat remain entirely original and are beautifully preserved. Beyond their visual refinement, they were intentionally chosen for Brazil's tropical climate, providing natural ventilation and exceptional seating comfort while referencing the long tradition of woven colonial Brazilian furniture. Tenreiro reinterpreted this historic material through a thoroughly modern lens, transforming it into one of the defining characteristics of his early work.

    The chair has undergone a meticulous professional restoration revealing the extraordinary depth, dramatic figuring, and warm tonal variation for which old-growth Brazilian rosewood is renowned. The finish presents a rich satin luster that highlights the natural character of the timber while respecting the integrity of the original piece.

    Importantly, the original caning has been preserved and remains in outstanding condition, exhibiting excellent tension, color, and structural stability.

    One of the most recognizable works in Tenreiro's oeuvre, the Cadeira de Embalo has appeared extensively in scholarly publications, museum catalogues, major exhibitions, books dedicated to Brazilian Modernism, and countless international design publications. It is widely illustrated as one of the defining icons of twentieth-century Brazilian furniture design, further underscoring its importance within the history of modern decorative arts.

    Today, authentic early examples remain exceedingly scarce. Their rarity is heightened by their historical significance as among the earliest productions from Tenreiro's own workshop and by growing international institutional and private collector demand.

    Combining sculptural elegance, extraordinary craftsmanship, historical importance, and remarkable comfort, the Cadeira de Embalo stands among the most significant achievements of Brazilian Modernist furniture design and represents one of Joaquim Tenreiro's most enduring masterpieces.
