Industrial designer Otto Zapf was born into a family of cabinetmakers in 1931 in Rossbach, former Czechoslovakia. In 1945 his family moved to Germany, to Eschborn near Frankfurt, where, discouraged by the dustiness of his father’s carpenter’s studio, young Zapf decided to study mathematics and physics at Goethe University. When he re-enters furniture design and manufacturing, his knowledge of mathematics will help him optimize his designs
Hans Knoll was born in 1914 in Stuttgart, Germany, into the successful family behind Walter Knoll & Co. Early 20th-century Germany was the epicenter of modern design theory, expressed especially by the artistic association Deutscher Werkbund, which included architects, designers, industrialists, and artists also from the famous Bauhaus, and hailed design based on the principles of rationality, functionality, and production for the masses. These ideas produced a powerful impact on young Hans, and would inspire him to create and produce the furniture of a new era. In 1937, after a brief stop in London, he moved to the United States, bringing his vision with him.
