Louis XVI Jean-Baptiste Boulard Canape

A three-seated French canape en peinte (settee in original paint) upholstered in yellow Scalamandre silk damask. Jean-Baptiste Boulard, born c.1725 - died 1789, received as a Master in 1755. He became one of the select few, with Jacob and Sene, who were comissioned by the Garde-Meuble supplying the royal chateau of Versailles, Fontainbleau, Compiegne and the Tuileries. One of the most respected menuisiers of his age, his work was known for its balance and refinement and the qualtiy of the timbers chosen. Four pieces of his seating furniture are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
