Description
Rare Early Pair of Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chairs & Ottoman, c. 1960
Designer: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Maker: G.R. Griffith, Chicago, USA
Materials: Polished stainless steel, leather
Dimensions (each chair): 31 h × 31.5 w × 32 d in seat 17"
A rare early production pair of Barcelona Chairs with matching ottoman, crafted circa 1960 by G.R. Griffith under the direct supervision of Mies van der Rohe. These pre-Knoll examples are distinguished by their precisely finished corners and a more minimal central cross reinforcement—hallmarks of Griffith's workshop quality.
Each piece retains its original G.R. Griffith manufacturer’s decal label, and all frames bear the studio label reading: "Stainless Steel Beauty Strength Durability."
Condition:
Wear is consistent with age and use. Surfaces show scratches throughout. The foam is dry and could be replaced if desired. Some fading and gray toning to the original leather dye, with a rich patina developed through years of use, slight tear .50" in one of the squares stable. The stainless steel frames show scratches but present well overall.
An exceptional and increasingly scarce example of early American production directly tied to the Bauhaus master’s own oversight. -
