Description
Exceptional set of four 1930s dining chairs by one of the members of the Seiz Breur artistic group by the Rennes carpenter Jacques Philippe (1896-1958), whose Brittany museum in Rennes and the departmental Breton museum of Quimper have several works. The chairs has a leather webbing. M. Philippe has studied primitive Celtic art. He found that the distinctiveness of it was to be essentially linear. Not only does it abound in variations on the geometric line, but curved lines describe arabesques as varied as those of oriental art. Celtic ornaments never reproduce living beings. M. Philippe has very ingeniously combined modern taste with the Celtic idea. Because it is not a question of creating half-barbaric furniture copying the Irish and Welsh antiquities.
