Description
A sculptural pair of Brazilian Mid-Century Modern armchairs by Cimo, crafted in rosewood during the 1960s. Their generous proportions and sensual curves embody the expressive character of postwar Brazilian design, balancing architectural structure with an inviting, almost fluid softness.
Each chair features a continuous upholstered body that sweeps from the rounded back into deeply curved arms. Sculptural pleating gathers along the lower sides, accentuating the chairs’ enveloping silhouette and creating an elegant sense of movement. Broad, softly crowned seats reinforce their relaxed proportions while preserving a tailored appearance.
The armchairs are upholstered in burnished caramel performance mohair velvet, selected for its rich color, supple hand, and subtle luminosity. The short directional pile shifts gently with the light, revealing nuanced tones of cognac, tobacco, and warm amber while emphasizing the depth of the curves and pleated detailing.
The upholstered forms rest within low rosewood bases composed of clean horizontal rails and substantial cylindrical legs. The dark, beautifully figured wood provides a precise architectural counterpoint to the softness above, grounding each chair while leaving the sculptural body visually prominent.
Cimo was among Brazil’s most significant twentieth-century furniture manufacturers, recognized for combining skilled woodworking, modern production, and progressive design. This rare pair reflects the company’s refined interpretation of Brazilian modernism: sensuous, materially rich, and distinctly comfortable. -
