Description
Time has not diminished the relevance of Danish design, especially of the pieces that were created in the middle of the 20th century, like this lounge chair. This is because the movement’s core concepts such as quality, functionality, and the aesthetic value - mainly in service of the former two - are timeless values that will never go out of style.
Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, Danish designers led the way in furniture design during the 1940s. They combined the inspiration brought by new industrial technologies with minimalist design. This style became so influential that it is recognised as a design movement in itself, entitled Danish Design with a subgroup known as Danish Modern. Exemplified by this lounge chair, the style focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. This model is a great example with its clean and cosy lines coupled with craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials, and the requirements of the human body. The design is a more streamlined, modern version of the Chesterfield chair with rolled arms, and a curved, sectioned back. The body’s gentle, rounded lines are highlighted by the luxurious upholstery that adds a lot of depth with its soft fabric. The wide seat and back are ideal for a great lounging experience aided by the conical wood legs that also provide an textural contrast to the upholstery.
From every single angle, this lounge chair offers a stunning silhouette and rich texture. Above all, Danish designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. This sentiment can be traced in the exquisite materials, the impeccable craftsmanship, and in the elegantly curved and rounded edges.
