Brazilian Modern Wood Slat & Metal Frame Armchair, Moveis Pallar, 1950s

$ 7,500
  • Description
    Once mistakenly attributed to Martin Eisler’s iconic Costela Chair (1953), this Slatted Lounge Chair was in fact created by Móveis Pailar, a São Paulo–based manufacturer active from 1966 to 1975 under the direction of designer Luiz Laufer. As scholarship around Brazilian modernism continues to deepen, pieces like this have gained renewed attention for their distinct identity and strong design language, separate from the more widely known studios of the era.

    The chair’s structure is defined by elegantly curved wooden slats, engineered to cradle the seat and back cushions in a way that feels both sculptural and ergonomic. These slats float above a black metal frame, creating a light, architectural silhouette while offering remarkable comfort.

    The cushions have been newly reupholstered in a plush, high-pile pink velvet, highlighting the chair’s playful yet sophisticated character. The original manufacturer’s label remains intact beneath the seat, securing provenance and enhancing its desirability for collectors of Brazilian mid-century design.

    A rare and beautifully proportioned example of late-1960s Brazilian craftsmanship.

    Designer Bio:
    This section focuses on the lesser-known treasures within Brazilian design, which have yet to receive the recognition they deserve from the public.

    Despite being overshadowed by the iconic designs of Joaquim Tenreiro, Carlo Hauner, Martin Eisler, Jorge Zalszupin and Sergio Rodrigues, these craftsmen and small manufacturers still managed to produce cutting-edge pieces that embodied the "modern values" of form and materiality.

    Despite existing alongside their more famous counterparts, these high-quality pieces have often been overlooked or stifled by commercial interests.
